Officer James Cheung was born and raised in San Jose, California, he pursued his passion for justice by enrolling at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Laws in International Law, he embarked on a successful legal career before transitioning to public safety.Officer Cheung accumulated eight years of distinguished legal practice experience at Hamlin Hamlin & McGill,known for his expertise in civil litigation.

In 2015, Officer Cheung joined the Los Angeles Police Department . He was initially assigned to the Pacific area, where he cut his teeth in patrol duties, responding to emergency calls, conducting community outreach, and collaborating with fellow officers to maintain public safety in the division’s diverse neighborhoods. He often assisted colleagues with understanding legal protocols, ensuring arrests and investigations adhered to procedural standards.

Officer Cheung’s exceptional performance in the Pacific Division led to his promotion to Police Officer III in 2019, a milestone that coincided with his assignment to the Metropolitan Division’s Crime Suppression Platoon. In this role, he demonstrated remarkable calm under pressure, using de-escalation techniques to defuse tensions and coordinate with team members to prevent violence.

In 2020, when he responded to an active shooter incident in commercial district. Despite sustaining a gunshot wound during the confrontation, he relying on his tactical training and unwavering courage to apprehend the suspect. For this extraordinary act of bravery and devotion to duty, Officer Cheung was awarded the Medal of Valor,recognizing exceptional courage in the face of imminent danger.

In August 2020,he finished his training course and was selected to join the D platoon of Metropolitan Division,also known as the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit (SWAT).In this role, he undergoes rigorous, specialized training in hostage rescue, counter-terrorism operations, and high-risk arrest scenarios.
